LA BARRA SURF CAMP - CENTRAL NICARAGUA
The AST Camp is centrally located in Puerto Sandino, in the Central Region of Nicaragua. Transfers from the airport put guests curb to camp in two hours allowing a full ½ day of surf out front day of arrival. This area of Nicaragua is very remote with incredible surfing and fishing just in front of the camp house. AST has 5 epic surf breaks within walking distance of our staircase to the beach in addition to our fleet of Super Pangas at the Puerto Sandino Harbor for outer reef and epic recon surf sessions.
AST offers one of the most desired locations in the Puerto Sandino area with oceanfront access and only a few steps to the surf and sand. Our guests have named the house “The Rasta House” due to its original colors of red, green and yellow bringing a Caribbean Vibe to the Pacific side of Nicaragua.
Valid for travel until June 30, 2012. Good for all La Barra packages.

THE SURF
Puerto Sandino is one of the richest areas of Nicaragua, providing surf for all levels from Beginner to Advanced. If you’re looking to catch your first wave, advance your skills or just come down and rip AST will place you in the right spot.
La Barra otherwise known as Puerto Sandino is known for its sand bottom left hander. AST operates 2 Super Pangas; this spot is by boat only.
Jacks - This spot is near La Barra and breaks only on low tide. Advanced surfers only, this is not a place for beginner or intermediate.
MeatGrinders - This wave is a 45 minute Panga ride south towards Veracruz. The left hander breaks over a shelf which creates a massive left slab with long shoulder. There are also several other waves along the way which we do not provide names. By the way, the fishing is excellent.
Chicken Bowls - Chicken bowls is the wave directly out front of the camp. A consistent left with occasional right is all drop and pop. The wave has two bowl sections, outside and inside over the reef. Breaks best on a high tide unlike other breaks by Panga, allowing our guests more surf time and sessions.
Launch Ramps - Launch Ramps a few hundred yards south of the camp you can count on peaky, ledges breaking right and left offering some of the best skate park type surf. This beach break will deliver a punch at high tide into low.
** other AST surf locations are Tres Bacas, Porky's and The Point.

Nicaragua Essentials
Bring a wetsuit vest or a spring suit. With the strong wind the water temp can change and it sometimes drops down to the upper 60's, so a vest might be needed on these days.
If you have any interest in fishing, bring some basic gear. You won't be sorry... the fishing is really good.
Make sure to bring a good pair of fins if you like to bodysurf. Some of the heavier beach breaks are great for bodysurfing.
Don't forget a windbreaker or rain jacket for the boat ride. Sometimes there are heavy rain squalls and it can get brisk on the ride home after surfing all day.
Thanks Logan...we did get swell everyday which was great. The trip was great, the people there were super cool and really took care of us. I will be sure to post some photos after I get done sifting through all of them. – Pat T
More +Offshore winds held out till noonish. A couple times it was an early blow out, but some days it didn't blow until 4pm. 2-4 go outs per day, 80 degree water, 90+ degree air. Great accommodations. The jewel of the trip was the cook Marihelia. She was hard at work all day every day. Great food, clean house, very peaceful. I am happy to say I surfed until I couldn't paddle any more. Next time I am planning to take bigger boards just due to the currents and length of the paddle. La Barra is a great wave and I would love to see it really on fire. Power, barrel sections, long shoulders, loved it! - Ross Y.
More +The swell was in all 10 days we were in Nicaragua. The accommodations were good. Marcos and Marihelia were wonderful hosts and worked very hard. I will get some pictures on facebook as soon as possible. Thank you for everything. - Dave H.
