CASA CORONA DEL MAR

Casa Corona del Mar (Crown of the Sea) is one of 14 luxurious vacation villas located in the exclusive gated community of Punta el Custodio, in the heart of the Riviera Nayarit approximately 70 miles north of Puerto Vallarta.

Punta el Custodio is a rocky promontory filled with lush tropical vegetation jutting out into the Pacific Ocean on this beautiful stretch of Nayarit coastline.  Just steps away to the south lies a largely deserted 12 mile long beach, safe for even the smallest of children, and a tidal estuary.   Out front of the estuary and on the south side of the promontory, is a nice right hand wave, generally perfect for beginners and great fun for long boarders, while sometimes going off with great shortboarding, depending on swell size and direction.  To the north of the headland is a series of spectacular cliffs offering incomparable views from the many gorgeous outlooks at Casa Corona del Mar.  Any direction you look to the horizon, the cobalt sky is filled with squadrons of pelicans and soaring frigate birds.  Whales and dolphins cruise just a few hundred yards off the point and dolphins play close to shore.  The tidal estuary leads back into a mangrove habitat that is a virtual Serengeti of shorebirds.

Casa Corona del Mar, situated on the northern side of the point,  is a 4 bedroom 4.5 bath villa, just completed in April, 2008.  It is spectacular and luxurious in every way, from its gorgeous cliffside setting with unparalleled coastline and sunset views to its sinfully relaxing sparkling infinity pool with waterfall, kid’s pool, and outdoor palapa. It’s hard to imagine a more peaceful and relaxing setting…. You might get so comfortable you’ll forget about surfing.

It features a fabulous open air, palapa style living room overlooking the ocean, a large patio with lush landscaping,  a huge kitchen with all the modern appliances you would expect including microwave oven, and a spacious, comfortable family room with satellite TV, DVD player, and a music station that is ipod compatible.  The villa also features wireless internet access.   The villa is decorated in warm, cool colors, creating an extremely pleasant and peaceful feel.

There are 2 master bedrooms with king beds and private patios and bathrooms;  1 guest room with queen bed and private bathroom;  and 1 guest room with 2 twin beds and private patio.  All bed rooms are fully air conditioned.  All told, the villa comfortably sleeps 8, depending on ages, etc.

The villa is decorated in inviting, cool colors and comes with a combination cook/housekeeper who prepares the 2 daily meals and does your laundry in the modern in-villa laundry room.  No cooking, no shopping, no laundry, no nothing… just pure relaxation.
Come to Casa Corona del Mar to immerse yourself in the sun, the sea, the waves, the luxuriant vegetation, and the warm ocean breezes of the Riviera Nayarit.  Come to Casa Corona del Mar for a highly affordable taste of 5 star private luxury and natural beauty at this incredible destination.

THE SURF

Just to the south of the rocky promontory where Casa Corona del Mar is perched, there’s a fun, flat faced right hander breaking across into the estuary mouth, mostly working on southerly direction swells.  great for beginners and intermediates and very fun longboarding.

For the more core surfers, you will want to travel for more juice and variety… an early wake up call, grab a cup of coffee, and hop in the car to head 60-90 minutes either north or south.

Starting to the north, about an hours drive, is the famous town of San Blas, with the legendary right hand point wave at Matanchan Bay.  The road out to Matanchan Bay is paved until the end, where it turns into dirt.  The point is now lined with numerous jetties, unfortunately destroying the 1 to 1 ½ mile rides that used to prevail here.  However, you can still ride along the jetties, with some tubes to be had.  Breaks on south swells only.

A hair south from Matanchan Bay along the dirt road, along the way to Santa Cruz (see below) is a very clean left hand point break called Aticama.  South swells.

Further south from Aticama along the dirt road is the classic left point break of Santa Cruz.  Take the road into town and head out from the plaza to the point itself.  Again, south swells.

And to the south of Casa Corona del Mar, about 90 minutes drive out to Punta Mita, there are a number of right and left hand points to be had.  Access can be somewhat difficult with the recent development on the point.  Any swell pretty much over 190 degrees hits here.

Heading back north from Punta Mita, is the well known spot of Sayulita, featuring waves often compared to San Onofre in southern California.  Small town there with bars and restaurants.  Mostly south and west swells.

A short distance to the north of Sayulita at the village of San Franciso are 2 breaks, Ostiones and San Pancho.  Ostiones is a left point break, best accessed by panga arranged right there at the Costa Azul Adventure Resort.  Driving and hiking from Costa Azul is possible, but ask at the resort for directions.  Needs a head high + swell from the south.  San Pancho is a lefty reef out in front of San Francisco.  Follow the main road through the village to the beach.  The reef is just to the south out front of the estuary.  Works best on southwest and west swells at low tide for exceptional barrels….and it can take some size.

Feliz Navidad!

Just wanted to check in and wish you a Merry Christmas from el Custodio.  We are having a wonderful family vacation and you were right that the photos did not do this place justice.  Our cooks, Ismael, the gardeners, and everyone else down here have been incredibly warm and hospitable.  I'm sure I've gained 5 lbs this week!  Last night one of the cooks invited us to Zacualpa to watch the local Nativity reenactment with her family (her little brother was the star of the show).  I'll send you a few photos highlighting our last few days down here in paradise.  Thanks again for all your efforts to ensure our amazing vacation.Felize Navidad!Weston

FOOD

As there are no readily accessible grocery markets nearby, the required meal plan offers 2 delicious and hearty meals per day (breakfast and the comida, the main afternoon meal), fresh fruit, snacks, and all the beer and soft drinks you want for a hugely affordable $210 per person per week.  Kids meal plan is $105 per person for 5-12yrs;  kids under 5 are free.

Have what’s on the menu or come back from that spear or deep sea fishing expedition with a stash of snapper or mackerel and have the cook prepare it for you.  The food is bountiful, fresh, and prepared with local Nayarit influences… real Mexican food at its very best.  The cook is flexible and with appropriate notice, can cater the meals to most specific dietary needs and requests.  And the best part…. No clean up, no muss, no fuss.

On Sundays, which is the cook/housekeeper day off, you are on your own in the kitchen to prepare your own breakfast and snacks from the well stocked pantry and refrigerator.  For the main meal, the plan includes a luscious dinner of bountiful seafood at one of the beachfront restaurants in Platanitos, the small village just a 10 minute walk from Casa Corona del Mar.

SURFED OUT?

Once you’ve had your fill in the surf, there’s a wealth of other outdoor activities to partake in at Punta el Custodio and the surrounding areas.  Stunning nature, secluded beaches, eco-adventure, and wildlife sanctuaries surround Casa Corona del Mar.

Enjoy fishing, whale watching, beach combing, horseback riding, kayaking and various nature adventures including waterfall hiking, bird watching, and jungle cruises.  Visit the eco sanctuary of Isla Isabel with thousands of nesting birds and the world famous bird sanctuary and mangrove estuary of La Tovara near San Blas, just an hours drive north.

No question, there’s plenty of things to do after your morning sessions…. that is if you can ever motivate enough to peel yourselves away from the comfort and relaxation of just chilling by the infinity pool and palapa at Casa Corona del Mar!
