THE SURF
The Natal Coastline has consistently good and uncrowded waves. The water temperature is warm, most likely you’ll be in a spring suit or boardies.
The surf season starts in April and ends in September with the peak season being May, June and July. The winds tend to be strong early morning offshore. There’ll be waves all year around but the summer is dominated by wind swells and the winter by solid ground swells. During cyclone season (Nov-Apr), the swell hits both Durban and the Mozambique coastline.
It’s not unusual to get insane surf from cyclones in the November to April period where the Durban basin turns into a heavy barreling peak, then runs into a point break set-up over a sand bottom. From September to November the onshore blow and Durban becomes a kite surfer’s paradise with plenty of wind and endless sandy beaches.
