The country was named in honor of Jesus Christ "the savior" which in Spanish translates to El Salvador. Located on the Pacific Coast of Central America this is the only country in the region without a Caribbean shoreline. The geography is defined by volcanic mountains, small bays, coves, capes and estuaries that dot the 200+ miles of coastline in this premier surf destination.
Throughout the 1980s the nation was torn by civil war, and in the 1990s it began to recover from the social, political and economic damage caused by a decade of struggle. Today San Salvador is a modern city, influenced by the culture of the United States and Western Europe, while the postwar governments have worked to privatize business and expand the nation's roads, communication services and other facilities.
WEATHER
El Salvador has a tropical climate with pronounced wet and dry seasons. Temperatures vary primarily with elevation and show little seasonal change. The Pacific lowlands are uniformly hot; the central plateau and mountain areas are more moderate. The rainy season extends from May to October. Almost all the annual rainfall occurs during this time, and yearly totals, particularly on southern-facing mountain slopes, can be as high as 2,170 millimeters (85.4 in). The best time to visit El Salvador would be at the beginning or end of the dry season. Protected areas and the central plateau receive less, although still significant, amounts. Rainfall during this season generally comes from low pressure over the Pacific and usually falls in heavy afternoon thunderstorms. Hurricanes occasionally form in the Pacific with the notable exception of Hurricane Mitch.
From November through April, the northeast trade winds control weather patterns. During these months, air flowing from the Caribbean has lost most of the precipitation while passing over the mountains in Honduras. By the time this air reaches El Salvador, it is dry, hot, and hazy.
