KOSRAE SURF RESORT
Kosrae is a small, mountainous island in the Caroline chain, located in the equatorial Pacific. With a population of only 8000, the island is quiet and peaceful, providing a perfect backdrop to the world-class waves breaking on the surrounding reefs. Development is sparse, and the island's one road does not access the NW side of the island, causing the quality surf to be boat-access only.
Covered with rainforests, waterfalls, and primal mangrove swamps, the "Island of the Sleeping Lady" has been called one of the most beautiful in the world, and the surrounding reefs are renowned for their coral and fish diversity. Occupied by the Japanese during WWII, Kosrae boasts shipwrecks, bunkers, and networks of tunnels leftover from the war, as well as the ruins of ancient cities built by the Kosraen people.
Sunday is still a day of rest on Kosrae, and as such, surfing and other active sports are not allowed. However, Sunday can be a great day to rest up after a week of nonstop surf, to experience the local culture by attending church, or to explore the island's natural diversity in a quiet and non-distracting manner.
Finally, please be aware that there are no ATM services on the island, so if you are planning to purchase local handicrafts, alcoholic beverages, or other extras, remember to bring US dollars!
Your accommodation is at a great eco-lodge in cottages perched on the edge of ancient mangroves across the road from a calm lagoon. Each room has two queen beds, made by the owner of the resort from local mangrove wood, A/C, fridge, mini-bar, cable TV and maid service. The mangrove channels are rife with fish and crab, and the incredible mangrove trees provide welcome shade and stunning surroundings.
Facilities: In-house restaurant, "Bully's " offers a full fresh seafood menu with Yellowfin tuna, Wahoo and Mangrove crab when available. You have to try the local breadfruit chips and cannot miss their famous Bully Burger made from fresh yellowfin tuna mixed with spices. Built at the end of a long jetty over the water of the mangroves, with beautiful views to the surrounding mountains....make sure you don't drink too much or you might find yourself swimming back to your room!
