EL SALVADOR

The country was named in honor of Jesus Christ "the savior" which in Spanish translates to El Salvador. Located on the Pacific Coast of Central America this is the only country in the region without a Caribbean shoreline. The geography is defined by volcanic mountains, small bays, coves, capes and estuaries that dot the 200+ miles of coastline.

Throughout the 1980s the nation was torn by civil war, and in the 1990s it began to recover from the social, political and economic damage caused by a decade of struggle. Today San Salvador is a modern city, influenced by the culture of the United States and Western Europe, while the postwar governments have worked to privatize business and expand the nation's roads, communication services and other facilities.
