THE SURF

Just to the south of the rocky promontory where Casa Corona del Mar is perched, there’s a fun, flat faced right hander breaking across into the estuary mouth, mostly working on southerly direction swells.  great for beginners and intermediates and very fun longboarding.

For the more core surfers, you will want to travel for more juice and variety… an early wake up call, grab a cup of coffee, and hop in the car to head 60-90 minutes either north or south.

Starting to the north, about an hours drive, is the famous town of San Blas, with the legendary right hand point wave at Matanchan Bay.  The road out to Matanchan Bay is paved until the end, where it turns into dirt.  The point is now lined with numerous jetties, unfortunately destroying the 1 to 1 ˝ mile rides that used to prevail here.  However, you can still ride along the jetties, with some tubes to be had.  Breaks on south swells only.

A hair south from Matanchan Bay along the dirt road, along the way to Santa Cruz (see below) is a very clean left hand point break called Aticama.  South swells.

Further south from Aticama along the dirt road is the classic left point break of Santa Cruz.  Take the road into town and head out from the plaza to the point itself.  Again, south swells.

And to the south of Casa Corona del Mar, about 90 minutes drive out to Punta Mita, there are a number of right and left hand points to be had.  Access can be somewhat difficult with the recent development on the point.  Any swell pretty much over 190 degrees hits here.

Heading back north from Punta Mita, is the well known spot of Sayulita, featuring waves often compared to San Onofre in southern California.  Small town there with bars and restaurants.  Mostly south and west swells.

A short distance to the north of Sayulita at the village of San Franciso are 2 breaks, Ostiones and San Pancho.  Ostiones is a left point break, best accessed by panga arranged right there at the Costa Azul Adventure Resort.  Driving and hiking from Costa Azul is possible, but ask at the resort for directions.  Needs a head high + swell from the south.  San Pancho is a lefty reef out in front of San Francisco.  Follow the main road through the village to the beach.  The reef is just to the south out front of the estuary.  Works best on southwest and west swells at low tide for exceptional barrels….and it can take some size.
