Nicaragua is a diverse Central American nation that has a lot to offer the adventuresome traveler. It is a great alternative for travelers seeking a different experience than Costa Rica or Mexico. The country's natural resources are abundant with 12 volcanoes, several of the largest lakes in the world and its beautiful Pacific and Caribbean beaches. For the outdoor enthusiast there is definitely a lot of opportunity to get out and explore.

Nicaragua has made great strides in the last ten years to improve its infrastructure and it shows. The roads are well paved, people are upbeat about the future and in general things are moving forward in a positive direction. Still as in any third world country some thing are going to take longer than expected and sometimes there can be unexpected changes.

Tourism is definitely on the rise and most likely will continue to increase for the next decade. In addition, the government has put together a tax exemption law that strongly encourages both local and foreign investments in tourist facilities. (No taxes for 10-15 years for tourist related hotels, restaurants, and tour services). Currently Nicaragua could be considered a great destination for a traveler who has maybe been to other Latin American destinations, but is looking for a more diverse and less crowded alternative.
