MEDICINE MAN

Straight up, whenever visiting an island in Indonesia there is concern about disease, in particular malaria, and especially if you are land based.  We won't downplay the risk of malaria, because it exists on Sumba, and a visit to Sumba will require use of a prescription anti-malarial. However, Nihiwatu Resort is EXTREMELY aware of those risks and takes every precaution to minimize the risk to its guests, including fogging and spraying regularly and posting reminders and do's & dont's to guests.  Bottom line, there has never been a guest who has contracted malaria at Nihiwatu. Regarding vaccinations and anti-malarials, we highly recommend you discuss with your doctor the proper preparations and time frame in which to get started.  For further information on vaccinations and malaria, the Centers for Disease Control is a good source of facts to help guide you. They are at:  www.cdc.gov/travel/seasia.htm

There's first aid at the resort and a hospital in Waingapu, we recommend you bring your own basic stash of medications:

  • Bandages & Band Aids - Latex Band-Aids work great
  • Quality Cloth Medical Tape
  • Second Skin
  • Anti-Biotic Ointment
  • Anti-Fungal Powder
  • Sleeping Pills
  • Betadine
  • Hydrogen Peroxide
  • Lomotil or other Anti-Diarrhea
  • Aspirin
  • Sun Block & Lip Block
  • Sunburn Lotion
